Simone Musumeci and Antonio Di Franca two scuba divers dived off Fuvahmulah Island in the Maldives hoping they would see amazing views under water, they couldn’t even imagine they will be hailed as heroes at the end of day after an heroic rescue.
The duo run a scuba diving agency and last year at the end of December while they were leading a tour in the Arabian Sea waters, they came across toa giant whale shark in need of desperate help.
While the group was heading back to the boat one of them spotted the massive unique creature, they were amazed by the sight at first but then noticed that the mammal was in trouble and needed help since there was a fishing rope knotted tightly around its body.
“While the divers were slowly getting back on the boat, our guide Gianluca, who was on board, shouted ‘whale shark,’”Musumeci told Cater News. “I immediately put my breathing mask back on and looked under the water. Then I saw a majestic animal swimming towards us with a huge rope around its neck.”
While the rest of the group turned to the boat Antonio and Simone jumped into the water to rescue the poor animal.
After 10 minutes their efforts paid off and they managed to cut the rope around the whales body and set her free.
“It took us about ten minutes to free the shark, while it dragged us around as we were holding to the rope,” Musumeci said. “When [the rope] finally came off, the animal stood still for a moment, as if it realised it was free, then it slowly swam downwards into the depths of the sea.”
But the giant creature swam back to them to show them gratitude for saving her life. “A few moments later it appeared again and swam closer to us like it wanted to thank us,” Simone added. “It was one of the most beautiful experiences of our lives and we will never forget it.”
Wow the whale must have been so happy when she got saved.
