An Australian shepherd mix dog from Alberta, Canada named Maggie is praised as a hero and with all the right reasons.
The clever dog managed to break out of her kennel during the night after being dropped off for a short stay at Barkers Pet Motel and Grooming.
Why may you ask? To comfort two little puppies on their first night there.
The little puppies were 9 week old and given that it was the first night they spent there it was normal for them to be scared but smart Maggie knew what they wanted.
The dog one week prior had just weaned her own litter of puppies so her maternal instincts kicked in the moment she heard the little ones crying.
A Barkers staff member, Alex Aldred, said to ABC News, “We’ve never really seen it before, where a dog sneaks out to some puppies and is so excited to see them.”
The employees there have witnessed a lot of sweet scenes over the years there but this one is definitely the sweetest.
Barkers operates as a boarding facility, but often takes in foster dogs from local rescue societies when there aren’t enough foster homes available – this is how the 9-week-old pups came to the facility.
All the dogs were settled into their kennels for the night by Sandi Aldred, the owner of Barkers.
She uses her phone to watch the furry animals from the surveillance cameras so while she was out with her family she decided to check for the little pooches.
While watching the camera she noticed something unusual, somehow Maggie had managed to slip out of her kennel and was laying outside the puppy’s kennel.
The surveillance camera catches every detail of how the old mama went and licks the dogs through the gate, sniffs them then laid outside next to them.
“We watched her on the cameras and she went straight around and she found their room,” Sandi told CBC. “She paid them a lot of attention and you could see her little tail wagging.”
Sandi added, “And she’d do the little bow down to them and poke them through the chain link gate of their room. She just decided that was where she was going to stay until we came to get her. It was really sweet. She just had to be with those puppies.”
Sandi came to the kennep after the dinner and found Maggie waiting for her by the door.
Sandi remembers “She came to me and she was really happy, and then she took me back to their room as if to say, ‘I really need to meet these puppies’.”
So she decided to allow Maggie to stay inside the kennel of the little puppies.
“They were just all so happy to be together,” Sandi explained. “She was nuzzling them really gently and nudging them, and then she laid down and let them cuddle with her.”
“The puppies needed her and she needed them,” she added. “It was pretty perfect.”
Maggie got inside the kennel and in the morning they were still cuddling each other.
But Maggie had to get back to her owners but we are sure those little ones enjoyed having her with them that first night.
We hope the little puppies have found their forever family and are enjoying life.
